Therefore, contrary to Banaji and to Marx in some placesI would not suggest using ‘capitalist’ in an undifferentiated sense for the activities of such figures as Roman estate managers or Venetian long-distance traders. The core subject of this book is the Marxist concept of the mode of production, and the difficult and important question of how to delineate different historical modes of production and what empirical evidence can be marshalled to form criteria to settle such a question.
