The book starts with a fantastically taught first chapter with old man tortoise trying to outrun the mechanised monsters and I did feel genuinely gutted when he didn’t make it. Abbey’s conclusion is a little wak and may disappoint some. However, not even the untimely death of Edward Abbey, in Marchcould deprive us of live news of this most obstinate of heroes.

The chapter concerning the outdoor festival became for me quite confused and muddy and was overlong for what it brought to the story, which was very little. I loved The Monkey Wrench Gangbut my expectations weren’t too high for this sequel. All in all the book was good, but could have been a lot better, more of the main cast, a little less of the subsidiary characters and things would have been improved greatly.

He seemed to sense haydjke people need to be shocked awake in order to react to the troubles of the world. Or, as the “author’s livss notes:. Abbey even namedrops himself, and at times the book hayeuke so self-indulgent that it’s probably only great to those in the thick of it, who get the inside jokes. Martin Paperback, Flashes of brilliance in the book are few and far between. Paperbackpages. It’s likely that it wasn’t quite finished at his death and that this explains some of its rough edges.
The critique of modern culture takes on a life of its own, almost out of the hands of the author. I also felt that the book was set a lot later than is implied in the text, which at certain points didn’t sit well.
Falls very very short of its original “Monkey Wrench Gang” and loses so much of the fun moments that made that book so wonderful and funny.
Still worth the read if you loved The Monkey Wrench Gangmight be a tad confusing if you had not. Even better and more radical than MWG. It would be an easy thing to say that “Hayduke Lives!

The first book had its four main he I read The Monkey Wrench Gang a few months back, had never heard of it but was immediately captivated by the story, the characters and Abbey’s real love, the American South West. I love Abbey but I didn’t love this book. Four men die in this book and the blood is real. I like reading Abbey, but the ol’ boy was on something when he did this.
