The parts where Hogben teaches us about how numbers work are wonderful examples of math instruction; the parts where he waxes lyrical about socialism could well landelot to a wonderful example of mass destruction.

The customary way of writing a book about mathematics is to show how each step follows logically from the one before without telling you what use there will be in taking it. Okay, a book on math that’s over pages long!

To be fair a little more than following rules is required for higher school mathematics, but not much more. Unlike his contemporaries, who were all for working through hundreds of geometry proofs for completeness, Hogben fills in the parts at each stage of mathematical development needed to reach the next stage and gives us no more. A sweep of some grandeur over the rise of mathematics, from calendar civilisations to the great flowering in Alexandria and beyond.

I read it while starting the more advanced mathematics courses at school and for the first time I found a book about mathematics that was not a recipe book for manipulating mathematical expressions.
