Anyway, a book, at least as I see it, is a labyrinth that’s designed to confuse people — with the intention of losing them, bringing them out of the narrow confines of their ambitions. This last voice is the voice of the storyteller revived which doesn’t make sense to me? How our lives are necessarily nukt and temporal or are they? The main story is simple enough and then again, it never really is ; it is about a girl who is born to be raised as a man.
I’m not sure how I am reacting to this book. Benjellpun Second Chance Pass it on, trade it in, give it a second life. They provide three possible endings along with commentary and analysis, including many frank statements that Islam punishes women and that their society is hypocritical about gender and sex.

View all 6 comments. I can’t help but feel, after having finished the Sand Child, that at least part tahwr the story has eluded me. Some of you will be tempted to dwell in that new residence, or at least to occupy a small part of it, suited to the dimensions of your bodies. I found myself being swallowed up by the writing itself but not the narrative at all.

It was hard to get through the final third and by the last chapter I got the suspicion that Tahar Ben Jalloun spent too much time reading Borges before he wrote this story. There are certainly stories out there where women in some societies have passed themselves as men in order to achieve some goal – but those stories only really deal with the performative issues of gender roles, and elide the deeper questions of being male and female.
