A defensiveness of a particularly complex kind existed on the subject and status of the heroic, since the traditional place of epic at the pinnacle of the hierarchy of genres, which continued to be asserted, sometimes with an insistence bordering on desperation, by “Ancient” loyalists, was under pressure not only from adversarial or countercultural attitudes, but from a sense among loyalists themselves that good epic no longer could or should be written, heroic morality being what it was.
